Why Beer Scoring

Beer scores help us identify the pubs that have the best kept beer and are the starting point for two of the awards Oxford branch of CAMRA gives.

Pubs in the Good Beer Guide (GBG)
We have to start the selection process with something and that is the pubs with the best beer scores in our area. A pub with bad scores isn’t going to progress to the next stage. Scoring also matters as we can’t put a pub forward for consideration if it doesn’t have any/enough beer scores.

Pub/s of the Year
From the GBG pubs in our area Oxford branch selects 2 Pubs of the Year (PotY). One as our City Pub of the Year, the other as our Town & Country Pub of the Year. (The City is defined as inside the Oxford ring road, Town & Country as outside the ring road.) The overall Branch Pub of the Year is then picked from these two.

No beer scores means no place in the GBG, so also no chance to win Pub of the Year.

Beer Quality
The CAMRA Pubs site displays a Beer Quality Accreditation (BQA) for each pub with sufficient beer scores. Very useful when trying to decide between pubs you aren’t familiar with.

The more people who score beers the more consistent the GBG/PotY/BQA will be. From the Pubs site just go to the venue, click on Beer Score and its just a few clicks. Very easy on a mobile (assuming data connection) – why not add a link to your Home Screen.
