The Oxford Branch hopes to hold its 20th CAMRA Beer Festival in Oxford Town Hall from 26th to 28th October 2017. (We have a provisional booking but still subject to CAMRA approval.) We usually have 140 different real ales and 50 more held over to the Saturday, and 60+ ciders and perries. Hot and cold food available and some seating available in the old library. Open to public 5 to 11 Thursday, 11 to 11 Friday, and 11 to 9 or when the beer ran out on Saturday. Entry on any day (pay on door, no advance sales) – last year we charged £10 or £8 to card-carrying CAMRA members (and members of OU Real Ale Society and Brookes Real Ale Society with proof) and included a commemorative glass and £6 of drink tokens. Additional tokens could be purchased.
Would you like to help? The festival is entirely organised, set up, and staffed by volunteers. All right, we get some help with equipment from CAMRA but that’s it. We need people to set up on Wednesday (moving barrels and scaffolding – there are some trollies but some lifting and carrying required, building and stocking the stillage, fitting cooling equipment) from 9 am. Then on Thursday building the bars and putting up notices, labels etc from 9 until we open to the public at 5. Then we need people to serve beer and do all the other little jobs that are needed for a successful festival until Sunday when we need to take it all down and get it ready to be collected.
Last year we created a more welcoming ambience on Saturday by clearing away the Thursday and Friday stillage to open up the main hall and provide some seating. That was very successful so we shall probably do it again. We can get in from 8am so if you can help until we open at 11, even just an hour, that would be very welcome.
It’s good fun and you get some beer and food tokens, a T shirt, and a warm glow from helping a wide variety of people have a good time. If you help on Sunday morning we will buy you lunch in a local hostelry. You don’t strictly need to be a CAMRA member but we have our reputation to think of so you will need to be a friend or relative of someone we know. Any previous experience would be useful but is not necessary. If you want to get involved this year look out for the staffing form on here which will have some more information or e-mail @
